Chapter 02

Learn the crafts behind the catch

About this chapter

Fishing tools in the Emirates hold the knowledge and wisdom of the sea. The net's design tells you about the fish, the trap's shape tells you about the current. This module teaches the art of the catch through the objects that made it possible, leading into the hands-on skill of net making and building different kinds of traps.

Every fishing net was made by hand, knot by knot. A net could take days.

Think of someone in your family who was good at making or fixing things. What did they make, and how did they learn it?

What would you like to learn to make, by hand?
